The Hawker Hunter is a subsonic British jet aircraft developed in the 1950s. The single-seat Hunter entered service as a maneuverable fighter aircraft, and later operated in fighter-bomber and reconnaissance roles in numerous conflicts.

Anti-migrant protest leads to clashes with police near Dresden

Iranian military have shot down a surveillance drone on its western border with a surface-to-air missile, reported the state news agency IRNA citing Farzad Fereidooni, commander of anti-aircraft systems in Kermanshah province. Governance matters

It is time we recognised that the current ways of fixing the environment are not working. Rivers are more contaminated; air is more polluted and cities are filling up with garbage we cannot handle. The question is: where are we going wrong? What do we need to do?
For this, we first need to recognise that India and countries like ours have to find new technical solutions and approaches to solve environmental problems. It is a fact that the already industrialised world had the surplus money to find technologies and fund mitigation and governance, and they continue to spend heavily even today. We have huge demands—everything from basic needs to infrastructure—on the same finances and will never be able to catch up in this game. So, we need to build a new practice of environmental management, which is affordable and sustainable.
In this way, environmental management options will have to be explored carefully and leaps made.
Take river cleaning. For long we have invested in sewage treatment plant technologies that were adopted by the rest of the world. We hoped we would clean our rivers the way other countries did. But we forgot that most of our cities do not have sanitation systems or underground sewage networks. Even if flush toilets of a few urban Indians are connected to the underground drain, and their waste is pumped for some length and transported to sewage plants and treated, it does not clean rivers. The reason is that the rest—in fact, the majority—do not have the same connection. Their waste goes to open drains and then to the same river or lake. The end result is dirty water.
Pollution control measures must be affordable to meet the needs of all. They must cut the cost of water supply and the cost of taking back wastewater. This would require reworking sewage management so that we can intercept wastewater in open drains and septic tanks, and treat it as cost effectively as possible. It would also require strategies to make sure that rivers have enough water to dilute wastewater.
All this can be done. But it will require backing new solutions, ensuring that they are put to practice and scaling them up.
For this, we also require the ultimate investment in our institutions of governance. Without them we cannot have arbitration or resolution of difficult conflicts. For too long in our environmental journey we have neglected this aspect. The rot has, in fact, accelerated in the past 10 years, even as environmental issues have been mainstreamed. This is because governance has never been on the agenda.
As a result, governments and civil society have invested all their political capital, bureaucratic time, energy of committees and media airtime into airing differences on project and policy designs, and not on the capacity that we need to implement these in the real world. We continue to churn out notifications and policies for regulating environmental degradation—everything from battery rules to hazardous waste management to plastic disposal and clearance for every building or shopping mall or penalties against illegal dumping of waste—without any consideration whether we can actually do this on the ground.
It is time we focused firmly and squarely on strengthening the capacity of regulatory agencies. For instance, even after years, the pollution control boards remain understaffed and grossly neglected. The problem is that this is an agenda nobody wants to touch. Governments want to downsize or outsource governance to the private sector or civil society. They do not believe they can fix what is broken, and high-profile environment ministers do not want to touch this as it brings them little kudos. It is a hard job and it is not immediately recognised. Civil society does not push for this because it distrusts the bureaucracy and believes that strengthening it will further corrode the power of the people. So, the agenda is unattended and institutions, abused.
This has to be the biggest lesson of the past four decades. We cannot fix what is broken till we make an attempt to fix it. There is no doubt that we cannot have the same “inspectors”, but we can have new-age tools of transparency, data analysis and do everything that builds public trust and credibility. Similarly, we cannot have the same “sticks” but we do need even stronger enforcement systems that can make deterrence work.
This is the real environmental agenda, but one that is inconvenient to handle. It is about change that matters.

– CSE’s Environment Education Unit (EEU) organised a two-day-long Orientation Workshop on Environmental Audit and Solid Waste Management for teachers and student on August 13-14, 2015 in partnership with Himachal Pradesh State Council for Science, Technology and Environment at Government Senior Secondary School, Bhunter, Kullu, Himachal Pradesh. The workshops received an overwhelming response – 1 science supervisor, 22 teachers and 42 students from 22 schools attended the workshops.
– Green Schools Programme (GSP) GOLD: GSP Gold, a part of CSE’s GSP, is an exclusive engagement with ten selected schools in Delhi/NCR to bring about change and sustain the green initiatives launched. The first GSP GOLD orientation workshop was conducted for 10 teachers and 10 students from the selected school on August 11, 2015 at CSE’s IHC office from 10 am to 2 pm. The objective of the workshop was to sensitise the participants about the need for model schools in Delhi to showcase good and successful green practices.

BENGALURU BULLS QUALIFY FOR THE FINALS OF THE SECOND SEASON OF STAR SPORTS PRO KABADDI
Mumbai, August 21: Bengaluru Bulls led by the indefatigable all-rounder Manjeet Chillar edged Telugu Titans 39-38 to seal the first spot in the finals of the second season of the Star Sports Pro Kabaddi. In what seemed to be a one-sided affair in favour of the Bulls, till about five minutes left on the clock the first play-off of the Star Sports Pro Kabaddi League came alive with the Titans coming back into the match with three super tackles and their star raider Rahul Chaudhari striking super form. There was a sudden urgency in their play and while the stadium reflected a sense of disappointment in their loss, there was delight in seeing them going down with a fight. The full-house at the Dome @ SVP, NSCI really had their monies worth.
Bengaluru yet again showed that they had it in them to stave off the late challenge from their rivals. Manjit and Dharamaraj who too had a superb match took the onus on themselves to deny Rahul Chaudhari a free rein during the last two raids. They blocked Rahul and did not allow him to raid deep and score more than one point. It was their sacrifice and on the spur decisions which finally clinched for Bengaluru their maiden entry into the finals.
The first half belonged to the winners as they inflicted an all-out to lead 15-10 towards the fag end of the first half. They had a lead of 16-10 at the break. It was Manjeet’s all-round play (4 raid points and 1 bonus), which really put the Bulls in the driver’ seat. Ajay Thakur their star raider came up with three points.
For Telugu Titans, the injury to Sukesh Hegde their most dependable player really hit hard. He limped off the court with his heavily strapped left knee giving way very early in the match. To add to their worries Meraj Sheykh also was out early and he looked slightly injured when he was tackled heavily. Besides Rahul was able to contribute just 1 point plus a bonus that didn’t help matters for the Titans.
The Bulls continued to dominate after the break. Ajay Thakur raised his game and Dharamaraj Cheralathan with Somvir Shekhar too started making clean and effective frontal tackles that gradually helped his team increase the lead substantially. They inflicted the second all-out by the 25th minute at 25-13. The trend continued despite Titans coming with some spirited super tackles. They had six in the match with Sandeep Kandola who didn’t have a good match getting two.
Deepak Niwas Hudda kept his teams hopes alive with substitute Prashant Rai showing pluck and grit. From 34-23 and 37-25 Titans clawed back courtesy Rahul and Sandeep who came up with two-point raids. It resulted in an all-out on the Bulls very soon. With about a minute and half left and the score 38-36 in favour of the Bulls it would have gone any way. Finally Manjeet and his boys kept their cool to seal their spot in the finals.
